For many two-wheel enthusiasts, taking a corner well is one of the most exciting and satisfying moments of riding. But corners are also where a rider's knowledge, skill, attention and decision-making are put to the greatest test.
In this post, we'll cover the core principles of cornering, the key points to keep in mind for a safe corner, the factors that affect a motorcycle's grip, and the main causes of skidding on the road.
Cornering means guiding the motorcycle through a bend, turn or corner in a controlled way.
A motorcycle travelling on a straight road tends, by nature, to keep going in a straight line unless a steering force is applied. But once we enter a corner, we need to change the motorcycle's direction. At this point, the motorcycle's balance, our speed, the lean angle, and tyre grip all become critically important.
The sharper the corner and the higher our speed, the more grip we're asking of the tyres. So cornering isn't just about leaning the motorcycle over.
Cornering is the combination of correct position, correct speed, correct gear, correct vision and correct control.
We should never assess any corner we pass on a motorcycle under exactly the same conditions. Many factors affect the character of a corner:
So even a corner you've ridden many times before can present completely different conditions on a different day. For example, a road that was dry yesterday might be slippery today because of rain. A corner that was clean this morning might have gravel, sand or other debris on it later in the day. The shaded part of the road might be wet, or you might encounter a vehicle in the corner that you didn't expect at all.
So there's an important principle we should never forget: the same corner is never always the same corner. We need to reassess the conditions every single time.

But the correct position doesn't always mean being at a fixed point on the road. Since road, traffic and environmental conditions are constantly changing, the correct position should also be determined based on the current conditions. The goal is always to gain more information, better visibility and a greater safety margin.
Entering a corner at the wrong speed is one of the most significant risks a rider can face. If you enter a corner too fast:
That's why most of your speed control should happen before you enter the corner. As you approach, assess the conditions and guide your motorcycle at a speed suited to the shape of the corner.
Remember: if you find yourself needing to slow down mid-corner, you most likely entered too fast.
Choosing the right gear for the corner helps you ride the motorcycle with more control and balance. Too high a gear can mean you don't get an adequate response when you need it. Too low a gear can create excessive engine braking or an abrupt delivery of power.
That's why it's important to select the right gear before entering the corner. Rather than changing gear mid-corner or making unnecessary movements that upset the motorcycle's balance, the necessary preparations should be completed before entering the corner wherever possible.
One of the core principles of cornering is this: enter the corner without braking. Hold a steady throttle through the corner, don't forget to use a touch of maintenance throttle. Open the throttle and accelerate on the exit.

Smooth, controlled throttle use is important to maintain the motorcycle's balance through the corner. When you can see the exit of the corner and the road ahead, and conditions allow, you can open the throttle in a controlled way to bring the motorcycle out of the corner in a balanced way.
The important thing here is to avoid sudden, harsh control inputs. Any hard braking, sudden throttle input or abrupt change of direction while in a corner can negatively affect the motorcycle's balance and the tyres' grip.

To allow the motorcycle to turn in a balanced way against the forces generated in a corner, it's leaned over into the turn.
Lean angle generally becomes more important as speed increases and the corner gets sharper. Tyre grip becomes especially critical at high speeds and in tight corners.
But the goal isn't to lean the motorcycle as far as possible. The goal is: to use the lean angle required for the current speed and corner conditions, with safe control and an adequate margin of grip.
Every motorcycle has a different cornering character. A motorcycle's ability to change direction and corner can vary depending on its design, weight, geometry, suspension system and tyres.

Riding within the limits set by the road and traffic conditions, and preventing a skid before it starts, is far safer than trying to regain control of the motorcycle once a skid has already begun. No matter how experienced you are, a motorcycle skid is an extremely dangerous situation. Once a skid begins, regaining control of the motorcycle isn't always possible.
Today, motorcycle manufacturers use many electronic systems to improve riding safety — ABS, traction control, various riding modes, cornering ABS systems, and electronic stability and control systems. But no electronic system can fully override the laws of physics. These systems can assist the rider, but they don't form the foundation of safety.
The safest approach is to ride in a way that means you rarely, if ever, need these systems to intervene.

Cornering, braking and accelerating all draw on the same grip capacity. So making harsh control inputs at the same time can push you past the available limit of grip.
